Resident water bill calculator
Enter the numbers from your utility bill and one resident's meter readings to see what they owe. Example numbers are filled in, so replace them with yours.
Resident's bill
$24.72
- Usage
- 3,240 gallons
- Water at $0.0040 per gallon
- $12.96
- Wastewater at $0.0030 per gallon
- $9.72
- Service charge
- $2.04
How the calculation works
- Your utility's usage charges divided by the master meter's usage gives your cost per gallon (or cubic foot).
- The resident's usage is this month's reading minus last month's.
- Their usage times your cost per gallon is their water charge. Wastewater works the same way.
- Fixed charges from the utility are split evenly across every unit, including vacant ones.
- An optional service charge is a percentage of the water and wastewater charges.
This follows the Texas PUC method for submetered billing. Other states have their own rules. In Texas, read our Texas water submetering guide for what your lease and bills must include. This calculator is not legal advice.
